The Online Compliance Consortium (OCC) is a business model designed for a regulated world.
The OCC collaboratively develops compliance and risk management training, tools and technology for the world's leading law firms. Representing 9 of the 10 magic circle firms, 60 of the top 100 UK firms and 24 of the top 25 US firms, the OCC applies a methodology that is designed to satisfy regulatory requirements whilst meeting the specific needs and quality standards of the world's leading law firms.
Compliance and risk management is best achieved when enough businesses in a profession or industry work together pragmatically to create the necessary tools that set best practice standards.
The OCC Core Group model allows like firms to share financial, intellectual and human resources to create solutions that directly satisfy their combined requirements. Since its inception in 2003 the OCC has spawned 10 Core Groups:
The OCC Risk Management System (RMS) is designed to allow a Compliance Team to efficiently manage risk and demonstrate to management and its regulator how it is doing so. The RMS evidences and tracks the control procedures and related activities the firm has put in place offering presentation-quality reporting and a complete audit trail.
VinciWorks' Risk Consulting Team can assist Compliance Officers in building and maintaining their Compliance Plan, Compliance Gap Analysis, Risk Register and Control Procedures, to ensure firms are using the RMS to the best of its capabilities and are prepared for regulators.
The RMS is cloud-based and secure with an intuitive web interface and advanced user-management capabilities which centralises access-control, communications, follow-up, alerts, reporting and audit capabilities as a complete and dynamic solution to replace the static Excel-based Risk Registers in place at many firms.
Based on the detailed specifications, features and functional requirements of 26 of the UK's leading law firms, VinciWorks designed and built the highly flexible OCC Learning Management System (LLMS) so that it could satisfy the unique needs of any professional firm.
The LLMS allows a firm to upload any format of learning content, automatically deploy, track, follow up and report on progress, scores, CPD, CLE and course completion whilst maintaining a detailed audit trail.
The LLMS includes VinciWorks unique "Nagware" that dynamically generates escalating reminders, and alerts that literally nag users to achieve compliance based on any event or non-event and or date.
Including Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Bribery, Data Protection, Risk Management, Solicitors Accounts Rules, the OCC online compliance suite of training courses are tailored to the needs of professional firms and designed to satisfy regulatory requirements whilst meeting the quality standards of the world's leading law firms.
All OCC courses are customisable allowing firms to integrate their own policies, procedures and firm specific messages.
The OCC compliance courses can be licensed individually or on a per firm basis.
Facilitated by VinciWorks the OCC has established itself as the benchmark for professional compliance solutions.
OCC Core Groups have to date produced the Online Compliance Suite consisting of innovative , highly engaging, e-learning training courses, a state of the art OCC Learning Management System and a Risk Register and Risk Management System. Current developments include a multi-jurisdictional CPD Tracking Engine, an Annual Declaration Management tool and a Client & Matter Inception solution.

The right technology solutions don't happen by accident. The OCC collaborative approach allows VinciWorks (the OCC's development partner) to develop tools that help its clients ensure they get the solutions and services they need and want, on time and to budget.
How the OCC Core Group Model works:
The combined investment in intellectual as well as financial resources by all Core Group firms ensures that the solution is of the highest quality in terms of practical requirements, reduces the risks one firm takes in trying to develop a solution independently of peers and reduces the costs to each individual firm by sharing the costs with the other Core Group firms.
Since its inception in 2003 the OCC has spawned 10 Core Groups:
UK Anti-Money Laundering Core Group
In 2004, 14 leading law firms formed the OCC under the banner of collaborative development with the intention to create a benchmark for the industry and set best practice standards for the legal profession. They achieved this by pooling their knowledge, resources and costs to design appropriate exercises and tools to train lawyers in AML. These firms formed the Anti-Money Laundering Core Group and together collaboratively wrote the content for the first versions of the courses and continue to take responsibility for its updating. See: AML Courses

Risk Management Core Group
Following the deployment of the AML courses, the number of reports to the Money Laundering Reporting Officer (MLRO) or Compliance Officer increased dramatically, proving that online learning does raise awareness of risk. As a result, a group of 16 self selecting OCC firms (including 8 of the original AML Core Group) formed a new core group to tackle the larger task or raising awareness of risk generally by development a series of Risk Management Awareness Courses. email@risk Core Group
Bird & Bird, Herbert Smith, Macfarlanes and Nabarro supported the development of a specific course dealing with the risks of email usage in a professional setting. As email has become the primary communication medium, these firms funded and oversaw the development of an innovative course training lawyers to mitigate the potential risks that email and Blackberry use, expose. See email@risk course

Anti-Bribery Core Group
Following the introduction of the Bribery Act on 1st July 2011, a group of 12 leading law firms continued the successful OCC model and collaborated to create two versions of the benchmark Anti-Bribery and Corruption course, one for UK and an international version for use globally. See: Anti-Bribery Course

Data Protection Core Group
In response to the £100,00 fine on Hertfordshire County Council in November 2010, the need for professional data protection training became apparent. Bircham Dyson Bell, Bridgehouse Partners, Clifford Chance, Herbert Smith, Macfarlanes and SNR Denton worked in collaboration with Helen Child, one of the UK's leading experts in Data Protection and Freedom of Information legislation, to create the comprehensive Data Protection Courses. Solicitors' Accounts Rules Core Group
Recently updated to conform with the new SRA Handbook and Outcomes Focused Regulations, 6 leading law firms collaborated n the design of the SRA Accounts Rules Course together with Janet Taylor who has been providing specialist SAR training and consultancy to law firms for 13 years. Recognising the significant consequence of non-compliance, this Core Group focused on delivering and maintaining a practical course intended to help lawyers understand the Accounts Rules and to mitigate the risks of a breach. See: SRA Accounts Rules Course

Outcome Focused Regulations Core Group
In preparation for the implementation of the new SRA Outcome Focused Regulations a core group consisting of Bird & Bird, Clyde & Co, Debevoise & Plimpton, DLA Piper, Irwin Mitchell, Osborne Clarke, SNR Denton and Weil Gotshal & Manges worked in collaboration with Bronwen Still and Tracey Calvert. Bronwen held a senior post at the Law Society and SRA and led the team that drafted the Solicitors’ Code of Conduct 2007 and the early drafts of the SRA Handbook 2011. Tracey worked for the Law Society and the SRA for over 14 years where she had a number of roles including Senior Ethics Adviser with the Ethics Guidance Team and as a policy executive drafting key sections of the SRA Handbook. The Group created a course that introduces users to the Solicitors Regulation Authority's (SRA) Outcomes-Focused Regulation and explores the new responsibilities that are placed on both law firms and individuals under OFR and highlights the differences between OFR and the old regulatory environment.

Risk Management System Core Group
The Online Compliance Consortium Risk Management System Core Group consisting of Bird & Bird, DLA Piper, Mayer Brown and Irwin Mitchell was formed in November 2010 in preparation for the introduction of the SRA’s Outcome Focused Regulation.
